Please be informed that there have been a few regulatory updates in the Nigeria data protection space recently that may affect your business as a data controller/processor, and we thought to share such updates with you.
Some of the updates include:
- The introduction of a compliance newsletter mandating organizations to designate data protection contacts, carry out mandatory data protection and privacy procedures and notify the Bureau on or before 25th November 2022.
- The introduction of a Data Protection Bill. The Data Protection Bill represents a more comprehensive and uniform data protection regulation in Nigeria. The Data Protection Bill:
- establishes a Governing Council
- Recognizes legitimate interest as a lawful basis for processing data.
- Expands the scope of the rights of data subjects and lots more.
